In my humble opinion, the problem not mentioned is the attitude of Jews to Jesus. The Jewish belief system holds that the Messiah is yet to come, therefore they absolutely reject Jesus. Any attempt to unify Judaism and Christianity will therefore not succeed unless one side gives way. it is notable that in both dispensationalism and christian zionism, Jesus is de-emphasised in preference to Israel. That is before we consider Jesus' message that we each are made in the image of God, and that what is important is our moral behaviour. Judaism (like Islam) demands strict adherence to a set of laws, compliance with which is promised to lead you to paradise. Quite a different moral code.
You raise a telling point about the "attitude" of the Jews. My understanding (from the Scriptures, Cf. the final Chapter of Acts for an explicit example), however, is that the Jews (as a whole) are currently suffering from judicial blindness. Sometime in the future, God will remove that blindness, and there will be a mass conversion to Christ. See Zachariah 12:10.

This article assumes the definition of Christian Zionism to be "merely the belief that God intends to keep His promises to Israel." However, Wikipedia defines it as "hold[ing] that the founding of Israel in 1948 was in accordance with biblical prophecies transmitted through the Old Testament." Which definition is correct, and who really determines it? I ask this because I seriously don't know.
Outstanding article on pre-Darbyite historical examples of Christian Zionism. Though I lean dispensationalist in my theology, I grow weary of J.D. Hall's (and others') broken record that you accurately portray -- namely, that all this Christian Zionism really began with Darby. Surely, Darby did amazing work, but he is not alone (as you point out ) in holding that God is not yet finished with Israel.

It is not only possible, but the reality of the faith of Christ that those who have and hold to it lift up Him and the nation of Israel.
