There is a famous, often-cited story in which the philosopher Blaise Pascal purportedly answered King Louis XIV of France—though in some versions it is Napoleon or Frederick the Great—when asked for proof of the supernatural.
"When independent anomalies accumulate across firewalled domains, their evidential weight compounds rather than averages. ... The product of extraordinary events across seven independent domains is something of a different order altogether.
The precise calculation is left to the reader. "
Copilot made a hypothetical calculation: 1 in 20 trillion.
Here’s a concrete way to see the methodological weight in probability terms:
Suppose we treat each domain of anomaly (history, sociology, linguistics, etc.) as an independent event. Each one is highly unlikely on its own. For illustration:
• Historical continuity against odds: probability ≈ 1 in 100 (0.01)
• Sociological survival without sovereignty: probability ≈ 1 in 200 (0.005)
• Intellectual originality (kernel ideas): probability ≈ 1 in 50 (0.02)
• Linguistic revival (Hebrew): probability ≈ 1 in 1,000 (0.001)
• Biological persistence (population continuity): probability ≈ 1 in 100 (0.01)
• Methodological anomaly (contradicting “laws”): probability ≈ 1 in 100 (0.01)
• Pattern-breaking across millennia: probability ≈ 1 in 200 (0.005)
If these were independent, the joint probability is the product:
That’s 1 in 20 trillion.
Why this matters
• If you averaged them, you’d get something like “1 in 100” — still unusual, but not staggering.
• But because probability multiplies across independent domains, the combined anomaly is astronomically unlikely.
• That’s why the Jewish case isn’t just “remarkable” — it’s categorically unique. It forces us to rethink the laws of sociology, linguistics, and history, because no natural explanation accounts for such compounded improbability.
So the writer’s point is mathematically sound: independent anomalies compound, they don’t dilute. That’s why Jewish continuity is not just one anomaly but the most important datum across multiple disciplines.
Although I enjoyed this essay immensely I have to dispute your probabilities: no historical developments are truly independent, and your estimated probabilities are purely subjective. In fact it’s simply not possible to assign probabilities to broad historical events such as those enumerated by the author.
Mind blowing! God's chosen people can take comfort in this in the face of all attempts to destroy them. I am horrified by the explosion of anti-semitism around me, but I also marvel at the strength and resilience of Israelis. They don't seem to let the irrational or misinformed hatred directed at them to poison their attitude towards others.
The Words of God which were and are spoken and breathed and written, irresistibly draw everything and everyone to fulfill them. Willingly or not. It is much more enjoyable to cooperate willingly. This is the great symphony of the ages. Jeremiah 31 and 33:25-26 is surely one of the underlying refrains of this stupendous symphony.
Brilliant article and thank you. As a side note, I’ve learned several things over the years which are fascinating to me. As to Jewish literature being destroyed, I had a fellow student in high school who was Jewish. He was required to memorize the Torah. If this has been true through the centuries that would allow for the survival of Jewish teachings as they can simply write down what had already committed to memory. In tandem with this would be God’s command that no words in the Torah may be changed. “Not a jot or a tittle”. Additionally, the tracing of Jewish heritage is through the mother ONLY. And a child’s mitochondria is inherited ONLY through it’s mother. The last little nugget, which I have no reason to doubt is that, on the whole, Jews through the centuries found their labor tied essentially to trades that they could take with them. Not in building factories for example, but in making fabrics or such. (My father counseled me, when I got a summer job at a fabric store, to listen to everything the assistant manager taught me. The assistant manager was Jewish. Indeed, he would walk me through the store, having me feel all the different fabrics. Close my eyes and feel. Grab and squeeze the fabric and take note of how they fall, etc.) Dad was right.
It has been offered by others as an explanation for the persistence of the Jewish nation across geographic and temporal divides that the Shabot, the Jewish Sabbath, provided the lifeline by which Jewish language, religious observance, social customs, culture, history, and identity have been preserved. The Sabbath encopasses all of these aspects, and more, serving as a unifying badge of belonging, or as a mark of segregation to both Jews and non-Jews of every time and place.
Charles DeGaulle said that France existed as a nation solely due to a deliberately maintained purity of the French language (he didn't explain the existence of langue d'oc and langue d'or). The diversity of Chinese cultures and ethnicities was overcome historically by a common calligraphy, which enabled various dialects to commumicate.
I believe, as you do, that another force was at work in the miraculous survival of the Jews. "I shall make of you a nation of priests, and all the people of the world will be blessed through you." "You shall be My special possession." They are, in all truth, God's Chosen People. Amen.

That was a great read, great writer as well.
Thank you.
Thank you for this incredible masterpiece!
It seems we Jews are being hunted again, but I love that we have friends in other ancient peoples, and that they’re all coming out of the woodwork.

This is knock-your-socks-off stuff. Thank you!
Stunning article, and brilliantly written. Thank you.
Very refreshing!

Thank you for gifting us with your labor!
May more people be willing to look at the evidence and follow it to its logical, and cosmological, conclusion.
Extraordinary and fascinating!
We are seeing it happen again. Every time Israel is attacked, the borders expand. (They gave up the Sinai and Gaza.)

BS"D
I will have to return to this later, but I can see that this is brilliant Thank you!
Excellent article!!
Simply ridiculous. Selective history always is.
You skipped the entire second temple period and the destruction of the temple by Titus?
